Day 2 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde Full Tunnel
How to get there: Pousada gate, 6:30 am.
Difficulty: Moderate, 13 km return, dark tunnels, headlamp.
Duration: 5-6 hrs with bird stops.
Best seasons: Morning mist, any month.
Where to stay: Same pousada night two.
Carbon: Zero.
Channel hugs cliff, ferns drip, laurel canopy tunnel. Three pitch-black sections, 100 m each, water knee-deep in spots. Emerge at 100 m waterfall veil, pool like green mirror. Lunch on rock, Madeira firecrest flits, tick box 1. Return golden hour, levada glows.

Day 3 – Verde to Furado & Cloud Forest Push
How to get there: 6 am same levada, branch at sign.
Difficulty: Hard, 15 km, root stairs, exposure.
Duration: 7 hrs to Casa das Queimadas refúgio.
Best seasons: Dry rock, May-June.
Where to stay: Queimadas stone hut (4 bunks, candle light).
Carbon: Still zero.
Levada narrows to boot-width, cliff left, drop right. Tunnel exit to cloud forest, moss beard on trees. Trocaz pigeon coos, tick box 2. Final hour climb through laurel, air thick as soup. Hut serves bolo do caco, garlic butter heaven.

Day 4 – Queimadas to Pico do Arieiro Balcony & Bus Out
How to get there: 5 am hut door, unmarked ridge trail (ask warden).
Difficulty: Expert, 800 m gain, knife-edge, sunrise goal.
Duration: 4 hrs to 1,818 m, 2 pm bus Funchal.
Best seasons: Clear dawn, winter rare snow.
Where to stay: N/A, transit.
Carbon: Bus <3 kg.
Pre-dawn push, headlamp on moss, chaffinch sings alarm, tick box 3. Emerge on Pico balcony, sea of clouds 1,000 m below, sunrise paints peaks gold. Coffee from thermos, legs jelly. Descent road to bus stop, wave to sunrise one last time.
